The Recovering Christian Devotional – About

Hey!

This is the first post in a long series/collection of posts that I’ll be writing for former Christians who are trying to transition to a non-Christian, and perhaps secular, life. I’ve decided to do it in the format of a “daily devotional,” similar to the kind that many Christians are prone to reading. In the end, the devotional should span roughly one year, or 365 posts. I shall try my best to post everyday, but…well, we all know how that goes ;)

Transitioning from such a particular and narrow worldview to a more open and healthy lifestyle can be difficult, and I wish to offer the best advice based on my own experiences. Since I was born into it, the fundamentalist, protestant worldview pretty much hijacked my existence for the first 19 years of my life. Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately, I have had quite a bit of “experience” in dealing with the transition to secular life and how it applies to major life issues such as death. Hopefully these experiences will spare someone else the trial-and-error difficulties with which I had to deal after the transition.

There are two main phases that are relevant to the recovery process:

  1. Letting go of Christianity, your former faith, and your old experiences.
  2. Embracing your new life.

Though each phase will comprise approximately 6 months, or half, of the posts in the series, I expect that the length of these phases will take vastly different amounts of time for different people. Therefore, feel free to read at your own pace and skip around to whichever posts seem most relevant to you at the moment. Just be careful to adequately deal with each phase, as both are vitally important to the recovery process.

At this time, I’d also like to make a little bit of a……disclaimer. If you are still a Christian, this is not an invitation to debate. In fact, if you really have an issue with me losing my faith and want to try and “get me saved,” don’t. I was a Christian for most of my life (so far). If it is necessary for you to believe that I never was a Christian in order to keep your faith, then please do so — but know that I have heard that BS accusation many times before. Believe me, I’ve had this conversation with many, many other Christians before you, and I’m not interested in having it again. I totally respect your beliefs — and I’m not bitter about my former faith — but understand that I really have forsaken it.

On the other hand, if you’re still a Christian, and you’re interested in the concept of losing your faith (or perhaps want to leave but simply don’t know how without a cosmic load of guilt and anxiety), then this series of posts might not be for you quite yet. However, keep your eye out for other posts on how to go about doing that.

Since my own experiences certainly do not encompass the wide range of experiences that all former Christians have, I plan to have at least one guest post per week (probably on Sundays) written by other former Christians who are eager to share their advice.

Also…it feels like it would be a good idea to do this thing with weekly themes. There are various advantages to doing this. Various topics will be able to be explored in depth, avoiding superficiality and redundancy in the posts. This should also be convenient for organizing the devotional into a series of weekly YouTube videos.

Hey, you never know. It might be a big hit :D

If you have any suggestions or requests, I’d be more than happy to oblige.
